Kota Doria Fabric
KOTA DORIA : LIGHT ON THE SKIN
Kota Doria fabric was once used only as headgear for royalties, but with the passing of time, the use of this fabric for sarees and suits increased as it became seen as auspicious during festivities. This fabric has such grace and elegance that you could fall in love with it with just one look. And it is because this fabric is a unique blend of two most widely worn fabrics- Cotton and silk
The combination of cotton and silk makes the final product both strong and soft. Kota Doria has the same strength as Cotton and same mesmerizing luster and softness as silk. The addition of silk also makes this fabric transparent which in turn makes an extremely light-weight and breathable fabric.
TRACING THE HISTORY OF KOTA DORIA
1. Kota Doria is originated in Mysore. There, artisans who practiced this were referred to as “Masurias”.
2. In the mid 17th century, when these Masurias were brought from Mysore in Karnataka to Kota by Rao Kishore Singh, a general in the Mughal Army during Shahjahan’s because making of this fabric was extremely tedious and complex and they wove a characteristic small squared lightweight cotton fabric and only the most skilled artisans of that time could make this fabric.
3. In 1969 Rao Kishore Singh died in a battle while fighting for the Mughal Emperor in Karnataka.
4. The union between the two states brought about the invention of the ‘Kota-Masuria’ sarees.
